Welcome to Aviation Discoveries! The intention of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about, and discover, the exciting world of aviation and the career opportunities associated with aviation.

Aviation effects our everyday lives. The activities that surround this industry are as varied as they are numerous. From flying the airplanes, to servicing and repairing them, to selling tickets, to managing large air traffic control centres, there are millions of people involved with aviation both directly and indirectly.

Importance to Canada

Due to the great expanse of this nation, and the interconnectivity of the world, aviation is vital to Canadians and their way of life. Without the airplane, most regions of this country would not be accessible.

How this course is set up

This course has been divided into two modules.  Module A will concentrate on the primary aspect of aviation ... how airplanes fly.  Module B will expand on this and provide opportunities for career exploration into the mechanics, air traffic control, and related fields. This class relies heavily on the use of the internet and online sources for the instruction, and on Microsoft Flight Simulator for lessons and labs. Also, there will be "hands on" exercises involving building flying model aircraft. Finally, there is the option for students to participate in an actual orientation flight through either the Abbotsford Flying Club, or Chinook Helicopters.

Conair Pilot Graham Wilson hosted two students from 1998-99 Term 3 for a tour of the cockpit of the fire-fighting DC6.

Expectations

The primary expectation of this class is that a student will attend with a positive attitude, and complete each lesson and exercise using the BEST effort.
