Group 2: Second Language

The principal aim for the subjects in group 2 at Abby Senior  is to enable students to use the French language (at the Standard Level) in a range of contexts and for many purposes; the courses focus on written and spoken.

IB French 11 & 12

In addition to the course content of the regular programme, IB French provides a greater challenge to the student by focusing on more intense, in-depth work in the language.  Students are exposed to ways of thought which differ from their own and develop the skills to more fluently express their own thoughts and beliefs, with the focus on three central themes:  Change in Our World, Exploring Groups, and Leisure.  Year 2 student evaluation is based on both in-class individual and group oral work as well as the May IB written exam.  In addition, students write the June French 12 Provincial Exam.

IB French 11

Prerequisite:  French 10 Honours or the teacher’s permission

Students become more adept at expressing themselves and their ideas both orally and in writing.  This is achieved through a variety of personalized activities and dialogues, library projects, exposure to French computer software, and surfing the Internet.  Media such as videos, cds, songs, and and the Internet are used to promote the awareness of French culture throughout the world.  Themes covered may include the future, adolescence, student life, the arts, and Francophone countries.

IB French 12

Prerequisite:  IB Year 1, French 11 or the teacher’s permission

This course is designed to extend students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.  The students will attain greater fluency by participating in debates, creating dialogues and group skits, as well as reading Francophone magazines and extracts from literature.  Students’ ability to express opinions on a wider variety of topics, including the controversial, will be highlighted.  Students will write the French 12 Provincial Exam.  Themes covered may include:  travel in exotic Francophone countries, fine arts, social issues (crime and violence), the environment, and the impact of new technology.
